ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Born in New York City in 1953, I spent the first four years of my life there. My family then moved to Pensacola, Florida where my father was stationed at a naval base. Fatefully, its officers' club was to become the very moonlit setting where, decades later, the experience of my "heightened consciousness" unfolded, as expressed in the Artist Statement, above. My entire oeuvre hinges on this very moment.
Three years later, at age seven, we moved to Paris. This was immediately following my father’s retirement, and it is where I spent most of my childhood. During our extended time in Paris, from 1960 to 1965, I began to draw with real focus. I especially recall drawing the central figure from a reproduction of Botticelli's masterpiece, The Birth of Venus, which hangs in Florence's Uffizi Gallery. My father gave me my first sketchbook during that period. School vacations provided us with the opportunity to team up on motoring trips with the family car, when I would draw from various sights — whether from memory or by direct observation.
My formal art education began in the early 1970s at Hobart College, upstate New York. During winter trimester of my junior year, I embarked on an independent study period at the Art Students League in New York City — painting and drawing from the model. After four years as an art major at Hobart, I attended the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture for the next two years. Subsequent to these formal studies, I started working on my own, outside a school setting, for the very first time. I continued with direct observation and, increasingly, also from my imagination. Starting in the mid-1980s, I began painting overseas on a number of occasions — including at the American Academy in Rome and in Berlin, Paris, and the South of France. My work has been exhibited in New York City, Paris, and Rome and appears in numerous public, private, and corporate collections.
Starting ca. 2000, I began developing symptoms of a chronic health condition which has seriously compromised my energy level and sense of well-being. This condition has led to the unfortunate and unavoidable outcome of limiting my artistic output and professional exposure. May this digital project serve to open a wider window onto my life and artistic endeavors.
